Noting that significant numbers of residents and liquidators report debilitating illnesses not easily explained by genetic effects this paper presents results of a literature search which suggests that a previously unrecognised neural pathway may be responsible and that a common link between radiation and chemical sensitivity syndromes may be identified.
Leukopenia feeding through to anomalous blood counts in irradiated individuals.
Intellectual development impaired. Effect is dose dependent.
Effective exposures to children in four regions of Ukraine ranged from 0.7mSv to 16.5 mSv. No evidence of increased rates of leukaemia but after the accident a rising number of unfavourable versions [of] acute lymphoblastic leukaemia ... No correlation between dose and leukaemia rates.
Haematological investigation of people returning to the 30km exclusion zone found no correlation between any of the types of blood lymphocyte aberrations found and either individual dose or levels of ground deposition. Incidence of cells with two chromosome exchanges attributed to uneven internal irradiation by transuranic elements.
Data on spontaneous abortion, perinatal mortality, congenital defects, cancer and inherited degenerative diseases of the neural system demonstrated the impact of chronic exposure to small doses.
A large proportion of a group of liquidators controlled against a healthy group 12 - 14 years after the accident reported a wide range of symptoms and exhibited many clinical disorders.
Findings of RERF and the authors' studies of effects in mammals and fish under low dose chronic exposure indicate absence of threshold. Dose-effect relationships in low dose range are best approximated by non-linear functions. The associations between radiation doses and rates of congenital malformation recorded in different regions of Belarus by Lazjuk et al. in 1999 could also be explained by non-linear relationships, according to authors. Coefficients of low dose ERRs determined by the RERF are higher than ERR for high doses.
