Goitre 3.5 times higher in contaminated region than non-contaminated. Increases in congenital defects. "Serious attention must be paid to the intensive increase of acute myeloid leukaemia":- from 1.57 in 1983-85 to 2.14-3.0 in 1986-1992.
Hard to understand due to appalling translation. A range of defects are discussed, with some reference to pesticides but no pattern is apparent. "But one can't exclude the low doses effection ... on the neural tube defects etiopathenogenesis both with their joint with chemical factors effect."!
Analysis of morbidity since 1977. Region divided into high and lower contamination zones. Increased post accident morbidity observed in both, 50% higher in more contaminated area.
Significant increase in birth defects in contaminated region and to lesser degree in control region.
Incidence associated with radiation exposure and heavy metals.
Wide range of clinical parameters used to monitor evacuated children, children with high thyroid doses, those exposed in utero and those born to liquidators. Steady decrease in general health; numbers of healthy children declined from 31% in 1987 to 10% in 1996 while the numbers with chronic diseases increased from 29% to 47% in the same period. Authors conclude without explanation that "... somatic diseases incidence cannot be connected with exposure [to] ionising radiation."
More than 80% increase in incidence of congenital malformation in contaminated zones and 47% increase in (undefined) control. There was no linear relationship with dose.
Living and working in the exclusion zone is associated with two or three fold risk of schizophrenia. "Non radiation factors cannot explain this phenomenon."
